Once upon a time, a prominent architect named Gaudi wanted to build a residential area. He planned and designed the landscape, but only two houses were built. 5. Sagrada Familia
At the northern edge of the city, you will find the Basilica of the Holy Family. Founded by a famous architect, this amazing building is unlike any other in Europe. It is so spectacular that UNESCO has designated it a World Heritage Site.
Antoni Gaudi was the most important Catalan architect of modern times. He was commissioned to design a neo-Gothic church in 1883. Instead, he created a signature example of his famous and unique Art Nouveau. When he started the building, he had no firm plans. He preferred to alter and add to the plans as work progressed.
Gaudí was only able to finish the church after he died. The architect left plans, but it took a long time for someone to continue those plans. It wasn’t until 2010 that the main part of the church was finished. Construction is still happening today, but the main work has been done.
This church has an expressive Nativity facade that shows the birth of Jesus, an evocative Passion facade that shows Jesus’s death and resurrection, and a lavish exterior.
Tourists may visit the basilica to see the stunning building and its beautiful art. The ceiling is so bright, it looks like it’s covered in glitter. The sanctuary is an enormous place with a high ceiling. Tourists can admire colorful stained-glass windows and opulent decorative details.
The apse is a jaw-dropping structure. Gaudí’s masterpiece best captures its essence when he describes it as “a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people.” Sagrada Familia church is known in Spanish as the Temple of the Expiatory of the Holy Family, and it is so beautiful.
6. Camp Nou
For architecture fans, Catalan Modernist buildings are must-see attractions. Camp Nou is a must see for football (soccer) fans. It’s the largest stadium in Europe and the second largest in the world. It was one of the venues for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and is today home of FC Barcelona.
